Davis Makes Statement in Win
Davis Makes Statement in Win
UC Davis made something of a statement this past weekend with a 53-7 win over Sacramento State.
And while Sac State is going through some rebuilding, the Hornets are no pushovers. The Aggies were just good out of the blocks.
Sac State held onto the ball early in the game, but the Davis defense bottled them up, making for a period of many rucks and much recycling, but not much ground gained. Eventually, the Sac State backs were forced into an error and center Yutaro Kobayashi jumped on the ball and took it in for a try.
The try allowed Davis to receive the restart, and with some possession the Aggies started to test the Sac State defense. Scrumhalf Joseph Vasilieff zipped in for a try, and after that, it was mostly Aggies. Davis pinned Sac State in their own half, and continually stole possession, with hooker Niall Smith creating many of those turnovers. Prop and co-captain Jacob Phan and lock Dan Finnamore produced plenty of go forward, and that allowed the Davis backs to run.
It was more of the same in the second half. Vasilieff got his second and ran the offense nicely throughout the game - earning player of the game honors.
Sac State did score on an interception, but it was overall a pretty dominant day for UC Davis.
Also in the Pacific Western Conference, Stanford tied Fresno State, Nevada defeated UC Santa Cruz 32-11 behind a solid defensive effort and two tries from Roman Neri, and Chico State defeated San Jose State 31-7.
