Winners Keep Winning in Florida
Week two of the Florida Youth Rugby Boys HS DI league and already some teams are making a statement.
Tampa Krewe defeated Naples in startlingly dominat fashion 31-3. Coach Chris DeAnnuntis said the victory was a total squad effort, as all 19 players available stepped up to play superb defense. The Krewe now sit 2-0, while Naples has got to be wondering what happened to their offense, as they were held tryless for the second week in a row.
Also 2-0 is Orlando after a 38-5 defeat of West Pines (FYR puts games into development mode if the score is out of reach and both teams agree, and keeps the score pre-development mode as the official score).
West Pines is a club formed out of 2015 state finalists Weston and the West Pines club. The merger was designed to allow for more depth, but this opening result wasn't what they wanted.
"While we lost a good number of seniors last year, we have two returning HS All-Americans and lots of new talent," said Coach Corey Carter. "This will definitely be a year of growth but we still have our eyes on the postseason. We will have to rely more on toughness and fitness than the skill and experience of last year."
Orlando was, therefore, always going to be a difficult task.
"We did not travel well and proved to be very susceptible to cold weather," said Carter, who fielded six freshman in his 1st team. "Orlando played sound rugby and capitalized on our mistakes. We showed flashes of brilliance with strong runs that gained good territory but we were seriously lacking in support. I think the guys finally realize how much work they have to do on getting more fit and learning the game plan."
Riviera Beach won their second-straight close game, beating Key Biscayne 19-17 to move to 2-0. The Jupiter Sharks, somehwta surprise winners over the Cape Pirates last week, defeated Daytona 24-7 to go 2-0.
Okapi HS opened their season with a 18-15 win over the Pirates, who would like to have converted one of their three tries.
"We have a very young team in certain crucial positions," said Cape Pirates Coach Steve Roper, whose starting scrumhalf is out injured and won't be back for a while. "We will be there at the end of the season. It was a deserved win by Okapi."
Below are the updated standings. There is only one game slates for next weekend, with West Pines visiting Okapi. (We adjusted the points difference in the standings to reflect that FYR limits the PD for any one game to 25.)
