Pacific Western Latest - Opening Weekend
The defending DIAA champion UC Davis Aggies opened up their 2016 season with an impressive 53-7 defeat of Sacramento State.
Despite changing coaches and some upheaval within the team as a result, Davis looked on point as Sacramento State struggled with not having all of their players - classes have not resumed at the school so some players had not returned.
Sac State Head Coach Adam Macrae said this wasn’t the start he wanted.
“We had a lot of young guys stepping into starting roles, and David took it to us in every aspect of play,” said Macrae. “We looked like a high school team out there.”
Meanwhile, Chico State also logged a win, beating San Jose State 31-7 to go to 1-0. On a wet and windy Saturday, CSU dominated up front and stole six scrums from SJSU. With so much possession, it was just a matter of time for the attack. Flanker Oisin Collins, lock Kevin Watson, flyhalf Danny Lalor, and center Drew Parson all scored tries and fullback Tommy Patton added 11 points on kicks.
Also in the Pacific Western Conference, Stanford got two tries from Patrick Crowley but that was just enough to secure a tie with Fresno State 24-24.
