Costa Wins Again, Sets Up Bosco Clash
Mira Costa continued its run through the Los Angeles Conference of Southern California's Varsity White division, beating Wilson HS Saturday 38-3.
The first right minutes were dominated by the Wilson Bruins as their forwards were able to drive and maintain possession. But every time the Bruins got within ten meters of the Mira Costa tryline, the Mustang defense stymied them. Eventually, the Bruins had to be content with a shot at goal on a penalty, and missed.
Given a chance to start over, Costa got going wiht the Tavai brothers leading the way. No. 8 Jonah Tavai chipped over the Wilson defense and chased in to gather and score. He converted his own try for a 7-0 lead.
From the restart, Justus Tavai ran onto a pass from flyhalf Brandon Espeso and exploded through for a 52-meter run. The play wqas set up by a well-taken lineout from captain ahd lock Justin Johnson, who controlled the lineout on the day.
The Mustangs received the ensuing restart and were once again on the attack as they drove the ball inside the Wilson 22. Wilson was able to fend off a couple of Mustang drives, but from a scrum some nifty ballhandling set up JUstus Tavai to crash through. Jonah Tavai converted for a 19-0 lead.
Wilson kept coming and was playing well, but they couldn't finish it off. And it was indicative of their problems that Wilson was on the attack and saw Mira Costa fullback pick off a pass and sprint 43 meters for a try.
The second half opened a little tighter, but again the Mira Costa Mustangs were able to make their possessions count. Prop Jordan Fischer pounced on a loose ball, broke a tackle, and expertly drew the final defender before offloading to wing Kevin Russell for a long-range try. Wilson replied with a penalty goal, but quickly Mira Costa answered as center Justus Tavai burst through for his third. Kaden Loversky converted.
That finished it off and the Mustangs are in excellent shape going into Friday's clash with St. John Bosco, which won big over Dana Hills (unofficla score 66-0). This follows on the heels of a big win over St. Monica, putting both Bosco and Mira Costa at 4-0 in league play.
