The young Rugby Bears were led by Zachary Tavenner and William Fuller, who each scored five tries, and Matthew Coyle, who kicked nine conversions as the frosh-sophs beat Cal Poly, UC Davis, and Claremont Colleges.
The Cal varsity side also dominatedm scoring 30 tries in four games.
“We got a lot of work done and we’ve got a lot of work to do,” said senior Miles Honens, who added praise for the younger Cal players. “Those guys played to our pattern, which is really promising, and we’ve got a few young guys making a bid to start on varsity, which is awesome.”
One of those young players is freshman Nathan Becker, who demonstrated a great work rate in his collegiate debut. “I was really excited to make my debut and super happy with my teammates’ play,” Becker said. “The effort was there.”
