The undefeateds remain undefeated in the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Conference, and the top four are starting to come into focus.

In the Pennsylvania Division, Bloomsburg improved to 4-0 after a 118-17 win over Lock Haven (0-4). The team has scored 49 tries this season, and 18 were dotted down on Saturday.

“This was our best overall team performance so far this season,” Bloomsburg coach Kevin Castner asserted. “Our depth continues to grow as we add new players to our match day roster. This was another match where we were again able to use all available reserves.”

Leading on both sides of the ball were usual suspects Nikki Snyder, Megan Reilly, Cait Rycek, and Selena Fernandez. Castner called flanker Ericka Heath a “ball hawk,” who was all over the field and forced several turnovers; scrumhalf Liz Kendrick suffocated her opposite and stifled Lock Haven’s offensive rhythm; and flyhalf Kelly Mason was a knockout off the tee, converting 14 of 18 tries.

“We have played a good amount of defense this season,” Castner reflected on the blowout scores. “But we work very hard on limiting their opportunities and converting any mistakes they may make into a turnover and offensive attack for us. Plain and simple, we are just trying to get better day, practice, and match.”

In other division news, East Stroudsburg beat Millersville (2-3) 48-7. The 3-0 side plays Shippensburg (1-1) this Friday, and then faces Bloomsburg Oct. 24. York (2-2) was a penalty kick better than Scranton (1-3) in an 8-5 decision.

In the Tri-State Division, Kutzown and Delaware improved to 3-0, however, the Fightin’ Blue Hens received a forfeit victory from LaSalle, which was short on numbers. Kutztown bettered St. Joe’s (3-1) 55-5.

“Coming into the match, we knew that St. Joe's would give us a good run,” Kutztown coach Sean Cobb forecasted. “St. Joe's always has athletes and they are always very organized. This would be our first real test of the year.”

The forwards controlled the opening minutes of the match, keeping the ball in tight and sending No. 8 Amber DeFabio into the try zone for the first of her two first-half scores. But from that point on, Kutztown starting spreading the ball and sending its backs into space. Fullback Natalie Flaim was exceptionally effective, and she scored a hat trick during the first 40. Outside center Danielle Ashway scored as well, while flyhalf Mary Cate Matta kicked five conversions for a 40-0 lead at the break.

“After the intermission we made a lot of changes,” Cobb explained. “We are still trying to work on building depth and figuring out where everyone is best suited to play.”

Rookie wing CJ Dickinson, scrumhalf Erica Papp, and Flaim scored in the second half. On the final play of the game, St. Joe’s swung the ball wide for a try and avoided the shutout.

Also in Tri-State, The College of New Jersey (2-3) defeated Drexel (2-1) 22-12.

League play will end on Oct. 31, and the conference championships will be contested on Nov. 7-8. National playoffs follow on Nov. 14.
