Will anyone set a record in this year's World Cup? Here's a look at some of the individual records from the Rugby World Cup both for all teams and the USA, and some speculation on who would break them.

Most Points All-Time

All Teams: Jonny Wilkinson, England, 277

No one is close to the former England flyhalf. Dan Carter will need a record-breaking tournament to do it and he’s the closest.

USA: Mike Hercus, 77

Interestingly, Chris Wyles just needs to score once (any way) to move past Kevin Dalzell to second place for the Eagles. But AJ MacGinty will probably bypass him to get to 2nd in this World Cup. Catching Hercus will take a while. If MacGinty makes it to another World Cup he’s got a shot, and if he plays in three, he has a very good shot.

Most Points, Single Tournament

All Teams: Grant Fox, NZ, 1987, 126

It’s amazing that this record, set during the time of four-point tries and a six-game tournament still stands. Top teams usually rest their flyhalf during the tournament, which affects the records. To break this record you need to average about 17 points a game if you play seven games, and 21 points a game if you play six. No one is doing that, but watch for Owen Farrell or Dan Biggar to be among the top scorers.

USA: Mike Hercus, 2003, 51

Hercus had a really strong tournament in 2003, when the Eagles had their strongest showing at the Rugby World Cup. He scored two tries and kicked 41 points and finished 7th in the entire tournament in scoring. The only player positioned to break this record is AJ MacGinty, and he would need to be lights out in the next two games and score a couple of tries. Won’t happen.

Most Tries All-Time

All Teams: Jonah Lomu, NZ, 15

The great Lomu did this in two tournaments. Bryan Habana is in his 3rd tournament already. Haban (11) and Drew Mitchell (12) can both catch Big Jonah.

USA: Kort Schubert, Ray Nelson, Chris Wyles 3

Schubert scored his three tries in the same tournament, 2003. Nelson needed two, and Wyles needed three. But that’s OK. Wyles obviously can take sole possession of this record with another try, and he’s got two games to do it. Two other current Eagles could tie or break this record, Taku Ngwenya, and Lou Stanfill, who are bother on two tries. 

Most Tries, Single Tournament

Jonah Lomu, NZ, 1999, 8

The blowouts aren’t there to help players load up on tries. But three players have three tries after two games, so there’s a chance.

USA: Kort Schubert. 2003, 3

Three players - Chris Wyles, Chris Baumann, and Titi Lamositele - have tries so far. So they could, in theory, score a couple in the remaining two games. If it’s anyone, it would be Wyles.
