Washington Selects Young Select Side for Canada Trip

The Rugby Washington Boys Loggers rep-side has announced 22 players selected for a U14/U15 Development Squad to play in a select side tournament in Kelowna, BC August 7-9.

Teams from British Columbia and Alberta will also be there.

"This program is intended to identify and develop future players for the Washington Boys Loggers JV and Varsity side,” said LoggersDirector and Head Coach Steve Brennan. “Like other Loggers tours, we will expose players to an environment of ‘rep-side’ rugby, as we begin to prepare them for higher-level rugby at the High School All-American and collegiate level.”

Illustrating the influence of “rugby families” on young players, the squad includes the younger siblings of several older Loggers, including Bradleys (Charles & Sam), Mohns (Isaac & Tristan), Sarginson (Colsen & Caden).

The tour will be led by coach Ray Keane, who most recently handled the Boys Loggers JV squad to their 2nd place finish in June’s Bakersfield Regional All-Star Tournament. From that squad, four JV Loggers were selected to play for The Eagle Impact Rugby Academy (EIRA) National Academy U16s squad, soundly defeating British Columbia in two July matches. Assisting in selections and coaching are Todd Vasey (Chuckanut) and Aaron Fry (Seattle Saracens) and Daniel Trierweiler (Seattle RFC & Seattle Saracens).

“I’m really pleased to have the commitment of families and coaches from all of our clubs,” said Brennan. “As the level of competition in North America increases, so does the volume and quality of opportunity for young men and women. Coaches and programs working together to give young players more exposure, earlier, is what will make the USA a force to reckon with in the coming years.”

Said David Miller, Washington Loggers Manager, “Touring Canada helps us do a few things: We get young players on the selectors’ radar screen, to present themselves for future Loggers consideration; We give current Loggers more time to play and learn their preferred position; Finally, young Loggers who need to improve particular skills or tactical decision-making can do so under high-performance training and match conditions. Working with the clubs to identify raw talent, and continuously raising current talent through high-performance training & touring, is our formula for future success.”
