Rugby Tennessee rolls into the expanded South Regional Cup Tournament at the RAC in Charlotte, NC looking to make an impact.

In addition to a strong Girls Varsity team, the Tennessee Tri-Stars will take a Boys Varsity, JV, and Middle School team to Charlotte.

“The Middle School program is important,” said Head Coach Mark Williams. “We have several players  who started playing select side in middle school.”

Leading the way for Tennessee is captain Jeffrey Rein out of Ravenwood. The back is a smart player, a dependable tackler, and central to the organization of the backline. He, like Ravenwood’s John Williams in the forwards, is a longtime Tri-Star player.

Father Ryan forward Matthew O’Connell is a formidable presence at 6-3. Several fairly green talents out of Memphis as well as Middle Tennessee are on the squad. But what Tennessee doesn’t have is any players from the East of the state, including state champs South Doyle. Sometimes, after a long season, said Williams, it’s tough to get players out for one more travel weekend. Had those players come out Williams might know a little bit more about the team’s bench. Depth will be key for this group.

The South RCT will feature six Boys Varsity teams. Each team plays three shortened games, so it’s not a round-robin. After the three games, teams will be seeded and funneled into a Cup, Plate, and Bowl final.
