Doylestown capped off a hugely successful weekend Sunday with a 38-10 defeat of Downingtown to win the Rugby Pa Boys HS Club title.

In addition, the Doylestown U15s won their state championship, while their U13s lost in the final.

On Saturday, Doylestown hammered an improving new program, Kutztown, to make the final, where they beat Downingtown in a decisive manner.

Decisiveness has been the watchword for Doylestown, who are ranked #8 in the county by GRR. In fact, the state final was the first Rugby Pa game they’ve played all season where they allowed points, having scored 435 points in seven league games and allowing zero.

“The first half of the final was pretty close,” said Doylestown Coach Mike McCandless. “They challenged us well in the ruck and knew they needed to compete for ball. So they counter-rucked and worked hard to poach us. But we adjusted and kept calm.”

Captain and flanker Angel Santiago led by example. A calm head in the melee, Santiago kept the forwards focused and playing smart defense until their offensive changes came, which they did.

And when they got those chances, the backs were up to the job. Doylestown’s backs are very young, but they are athletic and with flyhalf Mike Weir sowing good vision, they started to score.

“The whole team approach is based on the fundamentals,” said McCandless. “We’ve got the kids coming up through the program.”

Now the state champion, Doylestown looks ahead to an unofficial state final. West Shore United, which finished their conference season 5-0, did not participate in the state playoff because they accepted an invitational to the Boys High School National Championships tournament. West Shore finished 1-2, but they beat the Kansas City Jr. Blues and were competitive in losses to eventual club champions Royal Irish and, in the 3rd/4th playoff, United.

“How good are we? We don’t really know,” said McCandless. “We played Union out of New Jersey and beat them, and I think we have the makings of an excellent team. But we need to play other teams. We could have dodged the game against West Shore, but we want to see if we’re living up to our potential, and playing this game seems right.”

So it’s one of those unofficial games that means a lot, as West Shore (currently ranked #6) gets a chance to garner state bragging rights if not a state title, and Doylestown gets to see just how good they are.
