Four Left in Oregon HS Clubs
There's very little between the four HS club teams left in Rugby Oregon.
Sure Beaverton ended the season 10-0, but their victories over Eastside and Linn Benton (26-22 and 10-3) were pretty tight. Even #4 seed Bend has been a physical test for all concerned.
Linn Benton Head Coach Drew Wolf knows that confidence is a good thing - his team feels it - but tat confidence can also be a curse.
"We played Polk this past weekend and it was a really, really physical game, and I think it's exactly what our guys needed," he said. "We don't want them going into the playoffs feeling overly comfortable. Young players can get it in their minds that they're going to win, and don't put the work in to win. It's sort of a High School Hubris. Like you don't expect the other team to play hard against you."
Linn Benton beat Polk County 39-10 to finish their season 8-2 and 2nd in the league. They take on an Eastside that beat Linn Benton 34-27 on April 18, but ended up finishing behind in the standings because they didn't put any club members into referee courses this year.
That semi promises to be a tough one. Linn Benton is left by a defensive back row featuring No. 8 Nick Lockwood and Sam Scottaline, and with hooker Reed Farrar providing good possession, they can beat the physical, athletic Eastside team (if you're familiar with BYU center Hoseki Kofe, he played for Eastside, so that's what they're like).
Despite being 10-0, Beaverton is cautious, too. Coach Nathan Murray said he works hard to get his team to match greater size with superior fitness.
"We pride ourselves on our ability to move teams around the field," he said. "And we defend really well around the fringes."
That's how they beat Eastside May 1, with flyhalf Joseph McRae turning the Eastside attack with smart tactical kicking, and also kicking well from the tee (both teams scored four tries, but three conversions from McRae won it for Beaverton 26-22).
Lopeti Aisea also provided some smart tactical kicking, while Laytan Tanavasa partnered with him in the midfield. TJ Nomani is a strong defender on the wing, while Kincaid Crile is a lock who wins ball and disrupts opposition lineout throws.
All of this is coming together, and Murray said the key is what is happening on the younger levels.
"We've got the first generation of players from our youth program, and we're seeing that the basic skills are really good," he said. "It's a good basis to start from."
Beaverton faces Bend and Linn Benton plays Eastside Saturday afternoon at Lentz Park in Portland, Ore.
The winners go on to the state club final.
