Downingtown defeated North Philly 68-3 Thursday night to cap off their regular-season in the Rugby Pa Boys Club White division with a 6-0 record.

This was the fourth league game where Downingtown had denied their opposition a try, and in fact Downingtown only surrendered 36 points in those six games.

“Our defense has been very good,” said Head Coach Mark Drill. “We’re doing OK. I’ve been coaching a long time and I try not to get too high or too ow. But we’re doing well. We have an exciting game plan and we’re executing it.

Captain Caleb Fell, who is off to Colgate on a football scholarship when he graduates, is the glue for the defense, but there are other top performers, also. Jack Vallen is an effective center, and leads the team in tries. Flanker Lucas McMahon is something of a try-scorer also and is a dual threat in tat he can play in the backs. Maybe he’s a triple threat, as he can also kick goals.

Flyhalf Tyler Fiore keeps it all moving smoothly while James Meyer is a scrappy scrumhalf who, said Drill, has a battery that doesn’t run down.

Drill, who has been coaching rugby, football, and wrestling for over 20 years, and he still says it is hard to tell where his team stands. They were pushed by Doylestown II in league play, implying strongly that Doylestown I might be a stronger team. But with three HS Club divisions in Pennsylvania, the teams don’t really find out how they match up until the playoffs.

That’s why, in part, Downingtown took a tour to Ireland over Easter.

“It was a phenomenal experience,” said Drill. “The knowledge level grows so much, and so does the confidence. They seem to understand their rugby so much more. Now, we’ll see.”
