We here at Goff Rugby Report do our very best, and once in a while that’s good enough, and once in a while we make mistakes, and once in a while, we make a huge mistake.

This week, we talk about a huge mistake, and try to make it right.

We deleted, by mistake, Regis Jesuit from our Single-School Top 50. We should instead of deleting them, have move them up about 20 spots, but as use a spreadsheet and sometimes we delete a team in order to move them somewhere else. We just failed to put Regis Jesuit back in the list.

Now, this is bad because Regis is on a role. Since their close tournament loss to Jesuit of Dallas - the Texas team’s high water mark and maybe the Colorado team’s low water mark - and their close, 19-14 loss to East HS, Regis has won six in a row, including defeats of ranked teams St. Thomas Aquinas, PAC, Colorado Springs, and Aurora.

In those six varsity victories, they have allowed 51 points, and that includes 20 against Littleton in a game where Regis scored 64.

“Tackling, and our defense as a whole, as a big part of it all,” said Brian Normile, who coaches Regis Jesuit along with USA hooker Zach Fenoglio and Joe Lagan, with Eagle prop Nick Wallace making appearances, too. “We put in a very strong defensive effort against Aurora and Colorado Springs. We’ve got players who take pride in their defense. Basically our entire backline played linebacker for the football team, and they have great line speed and love to defend.”

It has become a team profile - make tackles, get up, make more tackles, and win games that way. It has worked, and is probably epitomized by flankers and twin brothers Donovan and Logan Ronan. They beat Aurora 12-7 on Saturday, Colorado Springs 13-12 on April 15 (a game in which Colorado Springs coach Otis McGregor said tackling was the difference), and PAC 12-0. Three ranked teams held to atonal of 19 points.

Tonight, Regis Jesuit plays Chaparral, who is 1-5 in league play. Jesuit is expected to win, and if that happens Regis will be 6-1, tied with East. East will take the #1 seed into the playoffs thanks to their 19-14 win over Regis on February 28.

In that game, Regis had some players just returning from wrestling season, and were missing some others who would become starters. It may be that a rematch will produce a different result, although East, whose only blemish is a 38-34 loss to Colorado Springs, has an impressive attack that has averaged almost 54 points a game.

The playoffs in Colorado begin this coming weekend, and if Regis does as expected, they will be the #2 seed.

That sets up the quarterfinal matchups as follows:

East v Cherry Creek

Regis Jesuit v Chaparral

Colorado Springs v Littleton

Aurora v PAC

And maybe next week we’ll see Regis Jesuit back in the rankings where they belong.
