East upended Herriman in the state semis in 2014, and ten of the 15 starters from that game suited up for Herriman on the weekend, and led the Mustangs to a 57-7 victory.
East is a big, physical, athletic team and posed a tremendous challenge, but Herriman handled it well enough. Brig Rush raced in for the first try of the day, converted by prop Jaeron Masina. East got the ball back but they struggled to bust through the Herriman pack, and center Christian Folau and Sione Bloomfield were immense on defense.
Ian Abbott provided nice go forward for Herriman and then the ball was sent out to fullback Tomasi Tonga, who found a gap and drew his man before feeding Rush for the wing’s second.
Tonga did well to pin East back with his boot and with the stiff wind making kicks difficult for East, the visitors were up against it in the first half. Bloomfield executed a nice switch with Marrott for another Herriman try, and then lock Kenton McPeak sent a long pass to center Niua Mahe, who sped in to make it 24-0.
Herriman would continue control possession and territory through the rest of the half, and although they slowed themselves with a few knock ons on the attack, they continued to frustrate East with a tough defense. Marrott scored on a quick tap just before halftime, and then, when the wind took East’s restart into touch on the full, Kyler Burch made a break and set up Marrott for one more and a 36-0 lead.
Against the wind Herriman seemed to do just fine. Flanker Alec Blonquist broke through and linked with Bloomfield to set up Rush’s third.
Burch gathered a kick and beat four defenders for the line, and then Mahe scored to make it 57-0.
East continued to play hard and moved the ball well through several phases and were rewarded with their first points of the game.
The day had its worrying note, though, as East’s Tevita Mahe, cousin to Herriman’s Mahe brothers, landed awkwardly on his head diving for a tackle and was airlifted to a local hospital. Players from both sides visited him later and he is expected to be released Monday, which is good news.
Meanwhile, elsewhere in Utah, Snow Canyon thumped rivals Lowland 71-24 behind another strong game from flyhalf Sam Slivers and five tries from Dyland Parry.
"It took us awhile to get going, but as soon as they scored to tie it up, it woke us up and we responded," Parry told The Spectrum.
Olympus beat Box Elder 50-7 to keep pace with idle Highland.
