South Doyle Takes Lessons Forward
South Doyle limped out of the Jesuit Classic battered but smiling and turned around with a new group of players to beat Maryville Tuesday evening 47-25 in SMAC league play.
The Tennessee team enjoyed some interesting and different competition at the Jesuit Classic, beating Fairfield Prep 19-0, tying West Shore 12-12, losing to top-ranked Gonzaga 39-0, and then fading thanks to injuries and fatigue in the 3rd/4th game 39-19 to West Shore.
Head Coach Matthew Lance said his team learned a lot, especially how to use the scrum cadence to your advantage when packing down.
“Our players hadn’t been to a training after the tournament and still we taking about how to incorporate what they’d learned into their game,” enthused Lance. “ am very proud of how the guys competed in their first ever true test against the best in the country. It exposed where we need to improve our game and where we can also hang with the best, building our confidence going into the post-season.”
Lance said his players “had a blast” playing against West Shore
“They have some outstanding kids and a great coach, both our teams play very similar, very physical rugby, and you could tell both our teams absolutely loved playing the game. I really hope to see them again in the future.”
Next up for South Doyle is a visit to Louisville University on a campus visit, and then a game against St. Xavier.
Thanks in part to being ranked by Goff Rugby Report and getting a GRR Player of the Week nod, South Doyle also got some notice from their local TV station.
