Song Earns UMW a Suspension
The University of Mary Washington men’s rugby team is under suspension following the release of an audio recording of some club members, along with others, singing a raunchy song at a party.
According to sources, a group of eight club members, six of which were not playing with the team on a playoff weekend, attended a party and during that party started singing one of the songs sometimes associated with rugby - offensive or raunchy lyrics, x-rated topics - and those at the party joined in.
The song was recorded and released to a faculty member, and the team has been suspended.
A source close to the team said the team will abide by the suspension. The source said the club takes responsibility for the club members’ actions even off the field.
The length of the suspension was not released, but the team members will be expect to attend education and training sessions about sexual assault and violence (neither things that were the cause for the suspension).
The timing of this action was poor for the UMW team. Following high-profile offensive actions by other college groups at other universities, and with the fact that earlier this year, UMW officials put together a task force to study how sexual assault is handled on campus, this song was bound to get the team in trouble.
