HS Games Around the USA

Boys HS Rugby starts to wake up after a long winter sleep for many states as the weather gets better.

It’s coming for many municipalities and schools to make March 1 the cutoff for us of fields, so the late February weekends are good for preseason tournaments.

So we come to several leagues just getting started:

In Washington and Colorado it’s basically about preseason games and round-robins. In Colorado East HS hosts Fort Collins and Northside, and PAC invites Westside, the Warriors, and North HS. Everything starts for real in a week.

In Washington, a preseason jamboree is this weekend. Missouri sees some teams in a jamboree, while the Kansas City Cougars meet St. Thomas Aquinas in an early-season meeting. The Cougars got some valuable experience in the HS 7s at the Las Vegas Invitational, going 3-2 and beating Bermuda and Laie Park. Aquinas is, as usual, very strong.

Oklahoma’s preseason scrimmages were last week, and Jenks faces Union’s Red squad Friday night, with three more games set for this weekend. Jenks, Bixby, Union all have had strong teams in the past. Union, fielding two teams in the league, is both strong and deep.

And so to games that are on the slate in mid-season.

We have already previewed the Southern California Varsity White final, which is View Park Prep v St. John Bosco.

The Varsity Red season wraps up before playoffs start.

In Northern California, Jesuit just beat Dixon in a midweek game, and now pits its best side in the multi-school division against rivals Sierra Foothills. That promises to be a huge clash.

The Florida league has a quiet weekend before bouncing back into full swing, while Texas is just getting started. We already looked at the big game between Dallas Jesuit and Westlake. That’s the marquee game in Texas while Kingwood takes on Woodlands and Rock Rugby plays Allen HS.

South Carolina entered week 2 with four games on the slate in Midlands and two more in Charleston. Oddly, not a single matchup this weekend involves two 1-0 teams.

In Arizona, Red Mountain seems to be the top team, and they take on Tempe/Scottsdale.

In the Deep South, it’s a bit of a quiet weekend with Shaw and St. Paul’s not playing league games. New Orleans Jesuit hosts Warren Easton.

In Georgia, Roswell visits unbeaten (2-0) Lassiter Trojans while 4-0 Phoenix A takes on 3-0 Mill Creek in a weekend that could decide a lot in that state.

(Last note: Gonzaga HS's preseason tournament has been called off due to weather)
