DII Play-Ins - Our Picks
DII Play-Ins - Our Picks
This weekend sees Men's DII college teams match up to find out who fills the final holes in the national playoffs; here's our breakdown.
UMass-Lowell faces Bentley (see preview http://www.goffrugbyreport.com/college-men/bentley-clashes-lowell-rne-final) for the Rugby Northeast title and the right to play Wisconsin-Whitewater in the Round of 16.
Bentley won the first match between these two 54-24. Lowell is much improved, but not by 30 points. Bentley Favored.
Vermont is waiting for the Upstate New York playoffs to finish. Cortland takes on Niagara and Buffalo State faces Oswego in the semis. Cortland was unstoppable until last week, when they lost to Oswego, but that was a game that had little to do with the standings. Cortland were #1 anyway. And it looks as though it will be a Cortland v Oswego final on Sunday, going by previous results. Cortland beat Buffalo State 44-19 September 28, and Oswego 24-10 September 20. Oswego beat Buffalo State, and both Oswego and Buffalo State beat Niagara. Cortland favored over Oswego, but not by much.
James Madison awaits the winner of Fairfield v Rowan. This is a bit of a tossup as the relative strengths of the Tri-State and MARC conferences are not really easy to know. Our gut is that Fairfield, with a really tough defense, wins this game. Fairfield Favored.
The #2 teams from the Potomac and Cardinals play off to see who faces Great Lakes champion Grand Valley State. While VMI is an excellent team, Towson is going to be just too much. Towson Favored.
The New England Wide v Colonial Coast game between Roger Williams and Central Conn. State will give the winner the dubious honor of playing Salisbury a week later. This is a pick 'em game. Roger Williams might have the edge as they are playing at home, but both teams are solid - CCSU is a grittier team with perhaps a better defense. RWU can score on anyone. Pick 'em.
The Deep South winners Louisiana Tech play Colorado College for the honor of playing GRR #1 Minnesota-Duluth. This is a tough one. The Deep South Conference had some good teams, but also some that couldn't take the field when it was game time. Colorado College played an independent schedule, and as a result might be toughened up. Colorado College Favored.
The runners up from the WIIL (UW-Stout) and Northern Lights (Northern Iowa) pay for the right to face St. Louis U. Both teams have beaten up on most of their competition, but have been defeated soundly by the very, very strong conference winners - Minnesota-Duluth and Wisconsin-Whitewater. Both, we suspect, might be good enough to be top 8 in the nation. But who wins? We're thinking Stout just because they have had, overall, some tougher opponents, and have been playing more solidly lately. UW-Stout Favored ... barely.
