Detailed Recount of Winona's Win

It's typically quite the exercise to recount every evolution of Winona's games. The ACRA DII champion records high point differentials, and last Saturday, the Black Katts banked its highest victory margin against Bemidji. But instead of simply giving a nod to the box score, here is the full account of Winona's 112-0 win, as retold by head coach Josh Krzewinski. Get comfortable.

From the opening kickoff, the Black Katts were controlling the ball in rucks and methodically moving down the field. The ball swung out to the backs, Lanoira Duhart broke a tackle, offloaded to fullback Nikki Linberg, who dashed 25 meters through the BSU defense before getting tripped up. Flanker Tori Langhans, who seemed to be everywhere on the field, scooped up the ball and dove across the line, 5-0.

Outside center Lindsey Bucki got involved early as WSU again drove the field, exploiting gaps. A long pass from flyhalf Katie Dries to Bucki allowed her to display her patented spin moves and touch down the second try of the evening. Dries conversion made it 12-0.

Despite playing on a narrow field, Winona was able to include the wings in the attack. Flanker Sam Wilcox was getting to each breakdown and helping win our ball quickly, which kept the Beaver defense from getting organized. Strong forward crash balls off the side of the ruck from prop Melanie Waibel and lock Kourtney Kavajecz set up the backs once again, as the ball got distributed out to wing Andi White, who made a break toward the line. Langhans was there once again in support, getting her second try of the match. Dries conversion, 19-0.

From the ensuing kickoff, Winona drove the field, utilizing a mix of forwards getting out wide, which spread out the defense. A Winona passing error gave BSU a quick shot, but it was knocked-on in the tackle.  Winona's scrum pushed back the Beavers and once again, Dries found Bucki who strolled in from 15 meters for her second try, which Dries converted, 26-0.

Scrumhalf Georgia Porter, who called a great mix of offensive moves between the forwards and backs, got involved as she took advantage of a BSU penalty with a quick-tap and dove across the line for a try, 31-0.

Bemidji started to get frustrated and began committing too many players to the ruck. This gave Winona an overload on the strong side of the field. Speedy Linberg inserted into the backline and sprinted though the Bemidji defense and put the ball over the line (36-0).

A series of rucks got the forwards working the weak side of the field, setting up an overload once again for Winona. Halfback Porter reversed the attack back to the opposite side of the field. Inside center Lanoria Duhart, who has been a handful for defenders all season, drew in both centers and was able to pass the ball out wide to Langhans, who secured her third try of the match.  43-0 with the Dries conversion.

The speed and power of the Winona attack kept BSU scrambling to find their defensive shape. The Black Katts kept the pressure on moving the ball and controlling the contact point. A big forward launch from Kavajecz and 8-man Amanda Custode set up a quick ruck and a pass out to the backs. The ball moved its way down the line as Winona did a great job drawing in defenders and putting the ball into space. That space allowed wing Lachen Ester to out run around the outside of the BSU wing and fullback for a try, 48-0.

The half ended the way it began with Langhans being in great position and finding her way in for her fourth try of the half.  Dries' conversion made it 55-0.

Second-half temperatures dropped, but Winona didn’t let that affect them. Bemidji must have had a nice talk at halftime as they came out with a bit more passion and control. However, front-rower Waibel wasn’t going to let them gain any confidence as she took a crash ball from Porter and barreled through BSU defenders for the try, which Dries converted, 62-0.

Kalene Hill took over at the flyhalf in the second half and got involved early. The first scrum of the second half found Hill exploiting a slow defensive line, and she cut though the gap for a 15-meter run and try. Dries slid over to wing but retained kicking duties, adding the extras for the 69-0 lead.

Getting players’ game time at other positions in the second half was a goal, and this put Duhart back in the pack playing prop. BSU kicked off after the try and the ball went directly to Duhart, who put her head down and broke through the Bemidji defense, taking the kick 60 meters for a try. Dries conversion, 76-0.

I kept reminding the girls to continue to work on fundamentals. “Don't try to do too much, run hard, secure the ball, and support each other in tackles.” The Black Katts kept on the prowl, as many new faces were getting game time in the second half. Freshman outside center Megan Wolff took advantage of her speed and made a nice sidestep to fake out the defense before running in her first try of the night, 81-0.

Flanker Samantha Wilcox wasn’t going to be denied. She had been working hard off the ball all night and eventually was able to get the ball in her hands and crash her way through the defense for a try. Dries' conversion made it 88-0.

From the ensuing kickoff, Winona continued to run crash balls off the side of the ruck. Hard runs from lock Kristen Semrow and Pomeroy again set up a wide field for the backs. Hill drew in two defenders and passed to outside center Megan Wolff, who dove in for her second try. Inside center Rachel Thompson converted, 95-0.

The rucking efforts of the team was fun to watch, as we continually controlled the breakdown. Freshman flanker Bailee Jerger took over for Langhans and found herself all over the pitch securing the ball, allowing for Winona to spread out the attack. Again the ball found its way into Wolff's hands.  This time she just put on the burners and ran 50 meters for another try.  Thompson's conversion put Winona over the 100-point mark, 102-0. The center followed with a try of her, 107-0.

The last try of the night came from Wilcox, who received the ball from a ruck won by hooker Squid Norman and Kavajecz.  The flanker slashed through the gap and touched it down, 112-0.
