Towson, Salisbury Still Top in Potomac

Towson University kept their momentum in the Potomac Men’s DII college conference with a 69-12 defeat of George Washington.

Towson controlled the game fairly well, using their forwards a little more than they normally do and punching holes in the GW defense. Greg Dreibelbis opened the scoring as he took and offload and was over.

GW worked to equalize but a patient Towson defense held them and produced turnover ball. Using their forwards again, Towson marched downfield and then hooker Jason Laraia set up scrumhalf Eric Sweeney for the second try.

Prop Jason Wolf was soon in at the corner, and then after George Washington punished some Towson penalties to get their first try, No. 8 Pat McKenna took a pass from Brian Shields and was in under the posts.

Wolf scored again and then lock Tyler Honeycutt carried three defenders over the line.

Towson started winning their restarts, which made life difficult for GW, and with the ball the Tigers were on a roll. Center John Schuberth scored on a pick-and-go. That made it 43-5 at halftime, and with the game firmly in hand, Towson rung the changes.

Still the tries came, with Sweeney getting his second, then fullback Tim Finnel scoring. Nick Tirabassi scored on yet another pick-and-go and then Tim Shields scored.

Sweeney converted two of those tries and four in the first half to go with his two tries to make 22 points all on his own.

Meanwhile Salisbury also won, 58-12 over George Mason to match Towson with a 3-0 league record.

Bake Carroll scored four tries for the Sharks.

Also in the Potomac, Georgetown came back to beat UMBC 15-10, to improve to 3-1 - good for 3rd in the league.
