HS Gamebreakers For April

We look back at games in April and find a long list of players that performed well in one or more games during the month.

Fran Moretti, Strake Jesuit

The captain and flyhalf for Strake was crucial in scoring a try and his leadership and his goalkicking in helping Strake beat Lake Travis twice this month, the latter time being the Texas/Louisiana Varsity Cup semifinal.

Brady Mullen, Medina

The Bees have been rolling through some impressive wins this month in Ohio and Mullen at No. 8 has been a key factor in those victories.

Jacob Brown, Celina

Brown’s two tries against FFA secured a semifinal spot for Celina in the Texas/Louisiana Varsity Cup.

Filisoni Vakalahi, San Mateo, Panther Rugby Academy

The San Mateo fullback has been electric in sparking a San Mateo offense that is consistently scoring 40 to 60 points, and more, in the NorCal Varsity Gold league. Vakalahi was also impressive in helping Panther Rugby Academy win the Tropical 7s.

Jacob Papesh, St. Ignatius

Able to play prop and lock, Papesh has been able to put injuries behind him and play in a powerful and physical way to help St. Ignatius beat Xavier and St. Edward. This highlight video below includes three Gamebreakers from St. Ignatius that we've talked about this season.

Nick Visaca, Carmichael Hawks

An outstanding finisher at wing, Visaca scored four tries in games against Elsie Allen and EPA in NorCal Varsity Gold league play.

Gavin Maguire, SFGG

Led by a strong defense SFGG has enjoyed a solid season in Northern California’s Premier league, and at flanker Maguire has led the way.

Tyler Holmberg, De La Salle

Since his dad is the DLS Head Coach he doesn’t get a lot of shout-outs, but the captain and scrumhalf for the Spartans has been excellent this season.

Braxton Bontrager, Penn HS

The Penn HS lock scored three tries in the space of a few days, helping Penn to wins over Westfield and Bishop Dwenger in Indiana.

Leo Esikia, Cavemen, Panther Rugby Academy

Another player who was huge important to Panther Rugby Academy’s Tropical 7s win, Esikia has been a defensive force for Cavemen as they beat Herriman in a critical Utah Youth Rugby match.

Noah Hughes, Bishop Dwenger

In scoring his second try of the day, Hughes won the game against Pendleton 24-20 with his try as time expired.

Jerry Fleming, Eastside Lions

The Eastside scrumhalf scored 21 points in his team’s 41-20 defeat of Liberty in Rugby Washington league play.

Hifofua Taumalolo, Hopkins

In two big wins for Hopkins in Minnesota, Taumalolo has scored six tries.

Antonio Conte, Delbarton HS

Two impressive performances from Delbarton were sparked by the hooker, who is probably quick enough to play center and possesses an imposing stiff-arm that tacklers really don't like. He scored against CBA and also Morris as Delbarton has surged in New Jersey.

Kingston Muta, Belmont Shore

A powerful game on attack for Muta drove Belmont Shore past SOC Raptors.

Ambrose Beach, Westshore

A series of victories, mostly by shutout, have vaulted Westshore to the top of the Rugby Ohio club discussion, and Beach, especially on defense, has helped lead the way.

Caleb Bascom, McQuaid Jesuit

The prop was a hard-nosed presence in the front row and scored three tries in wins over Orchard Park and and Kenmore.

Will Barrett, San Diego Mustangs

The Mustangs No. 8 was monstrous as he helped his team beat Belmont Shore, SOC Raptors, and Thunder, all ranked teams.

Carter Keller, Granite Bay

Keller’s leadership at captain, his defense and work in the breakdown at flanker, and his try-scoring led Granite Bay to a crucial win over SFGG.

Bailey O’Malley, Louis Cipolo, Doylestown

This midfield partnership has led Doylestown to a series of impressive showings to put the club atop RugbyPA.

Joshua Ragsdale, St. Rita

The St. Rita captain and prop scored five tries in a win and a loss this month in Illinois.

Adam Thomson, Katy Barbarians

The Barbarians’ flanker and captain led by example and was on the scoreboard twice to lead Katy over Plano.
