Dramatic Finishes in HS Games Around the Nation

Fairfield beat Aspetuck in the cold.

Here's a quick look at some of the HS results around the nation.

On a very cold Saturday in Connecticut, Fairfield Prep defeated Aspetuck 32-27.

Fairfield Prep defeated Aspetuck 32-27 in the first game of our regular season.

It was a fairly typical opening game for both teams as they tried to hit the ground running. Their forwards were probably better than the backs on the day—ball handling and kicking suffered in the conditions.

The game was back-and-forth throughout and finally Will Kelly scored at the death to win it for Fairfield. Billy Mitchell, Alex Iadarola, and John Morris also scored for Fairfield. Cole Westerlund scored a try also and added seven points with the boot.

St. Xavier out of Cincinnati won two games on the day, beating the Louisville Crash 37-10 and then HSE Mudsock out of Indiana 42-7.

Head Coach mark Weidner said he has a very strong starting 15 but the other players looking to break into the starting lineup have work to do.

Carson Padgett scored four tries on the day while Camden Bowling was a physical force. Jake Schlieff is taking over the flyhalf position and doing well there, while Sammy Schwartz led from the front.

Also in Ohio, Archbishop Moeller hosted Rockford out of Michigan and Bishop Dwenger out of Indiana,

Rebounding from a somewhat surprising loss to Withrow last week, Moeller won both of their games today.

"We’re confident in our schedule and believe it will prepare us for a competitive conference season," said Moeller Head Coach Dominic DeNoma. "Bringing in teams like Mudsock will help us gear up for the three powerhouse programs we face in conference play. We’ve made some big changes to the program this year, including working with four Miami University grad students and the owner of Cincinnati sports psychology and Moeller alumni Brian Arlinghaus on sports psychology, refining our offseason strength program, and bolstering our coaching staff."

Mark Heidrich, who coaches at University of Cincinnati and the Cincinnati Wolfhounds, and Jose Schanez, an assistant at Xavier University and a current Wolfhounds player, have been added to the staff.

Led by captains Gabriel Sagrent and Josh Burkey, Big Moe will need their class of juniors to step up.

In Utah, Herriman followed up on last week's win over East HS with a victory over Brighton. Herriman shut out Bright in the first half and made major lineup changes in their preseason match, finishing up 43-24.

Ryker Syddall and MacRae Parker continue to play well for the Mustangs and they scored two tries each. Kaden Sturgis has set the tone physically while Kemper Castro and Siona Nau were also strong.

Regis Jesuit looked impressive in a 24-0 shutout of Monarch as Colorado eases into its spring.

St. Thomas of Houston beat Dallas Jesuit at the death 27-26 on Friday to win the Bishop's Cup. Outside center Berhane Linbeck scored two tries, one of which was a 70-meter run, and added seven points from the kicking tee.

"The entire team played aggressive, lights-out defense," said St. Thomas Head Coach James Wilfinger.

St. Thomas trailed 26-22 with about 90 seconds left but the forwards put the pressure on and finally prop Khairan McQueen-Clayton carried it over to win the game.

New Trier won a bit of a battel with Pendleton in Indiana, with the Illinois side taking the decision 17-15. This was a bit of a basher; New Trier's defense was clutch.

In Northern California we had another dramatic finish as Marin held off Danville 21-18. The Highlanders got two penalty goals from flyhalf Sam Rodriguez in the first half, but Danville got an early penalty from flyhalf Jarred Randall and a try from No. 8 and captain Thomas Ashton to lead 8-6 midway through the first half.

Marin was able to score with wing Bear Lyon going over to make it 11-8 Marin, and Rodriguez added a penalty goal a few minutes after halftime. Ashton scored his second for the Oaks to make it a one-point game at 14-13, but Marin got a crucial cushion when hooker Kevin Peterson scored and Rodriguez converted. Now Danville needed to score twice. They were able to get a try as Randall raced over, but that was it: Marin 21 Danville 18.
