Conference and Rankings Decisions in D1A Weekend

UCLA and CWU are back in action. Alex Goff photo.

The California Conference decided its champion last week with Saint Mary's defeating Cal Poly in what turned out to be a close one.

This week we decide who takes 2nd with Cal Poly playing upstarts UC Santa Barbara. It's likely that the Mustangs are favored, but this has still been a good year for the Gauchos and we could well see them in the postseason in some form.

What has also been interesting in this conference is the growth of the teams that were struggling early. This is especially true of Cal State Long Beach, which looked overwhelmed early and has now won three in a row to move to .500. In those three games they have scored 168 points.

California D1A W L T PA PA PD BT BL Pts
Saint Mary's 8 0 0 698 81 617 8 0 40
Cal Poly 6 1 0 565 72 493 7 1 32
UCSB 6 1 0 271 157 114 6 0 30
CSULB 3 3 0 203 241 -38 3 0 15
UC Santa Cruz 2 5 0 135 368 -233 3 0 11
San Diego State 2 4 0 76 367 -291 2 1 11
Sacramento State 1 6 0 123 326 -203 3 1 8
UC Davis 1 5 0 76 316 -240 1 0 5
Santa Clara 1 5 0 86 391 -305 1 0 5

San Diego State now has two wins and faces off with UC Santa Cruz for a tighter hold on 5th in the conference.

The Midwest, of course, has been disrupted by the issues at Adrian. But everyone else has games to play and this week it's McKendree at Davenport. It's a good measuring stick for McKendree as they improve in a very, very tough conference.

Across Borders

And of course we have some high-rankings meetings across conference borders. The Huckaby Cup is on the line with Life at Arkansas State. Arizona crosses the country to play Army—both teams looked impressive last week. Cal had a week off from games and now travels to Provo to face a BYU team that has played a fairly demanding schedule so far. Central Washington hosts Trinity Western before taking on BYU and Arizona in the next few weeks.

And finally, Saint Mary's is at UCLA, which is a good chance for both to show that maybe they have a defense that can keep an opponent under 35.
