Roberts Set to Take the Helm at Western Washington
Western Washington University Men's Rugby has signed on Adam Roberts as their new paid Head Coach.
A native of White Rock, BC, Roberts was a student of WWU Director of Rugby Paul Horne for many years. An elite-level baseball and hockey player, Roberts was persuaded by Horne to try rgby and never looked back. He coached with WWU as a volunteer coach for several years until the COVID pandemic made traveling across borders too difficult.
Roberts holds a Master of Physical Education specializing in Rugby Development and a Level 4 coaching certification from World Rugby. He has worked with the Canadian National Youth Program, where he led the Canadian U20 team to three World Trophy Championships.
Prior to joining Western Washington University, Roberts served as the head coach of the Earl Marriott Secondary senior boys rugby team. During his tenure, he led the team to numerous victories and developed several players who have advanced to professional rugby. Notably, Earl Marriott has produced seven players who have represented the Canadian national team, with four of them starting in a test match against the USA.
“We are thrilled to welcome Adam Roberts to the Western Washington University family,” said Paul Horne, WWU Director of Rugby. “His experience, knowledge, and commitment to the sport align perfectly with our vision for the men’s rugby program. We are confident that under his leadership, our team will continue to grow and excel as the National Championship program.”
"I am honored to join the Western Washington University men's rugby program," added Roberts. "I am eager to work with our talented athletes and build a strong culture of excellence. With the support of the university and community, we can achieve great things."
The first WWU rugby coach to be on the University payroll as an employee of the institution, Roberts will officially begin his duties as head coach on January 1. He will be responsible for all aspects of the program, including recruiting, coaching, and team management.
