The West Coast Sevens Tournament Returns
The West Coast Sevens Tournament Returns
Back on the schedule the West Coast 7s collegiate tournament will be at the Olympic Training Center this weekend in Chula Vista, Calif.
A casualty of COVID shutdowns, the West Coast 7s took a while to get back up and going in part because college rugby teams on the Pacific were still figuring out what they wanted to do. After essentially no 7s among West Coast teams in 2023-24, the old idea of playing some 7s in the fall regained traction.
Two weeks ago the warmup tournament was held at Claremont McKenna Collegewith Cal winning that event. Their closest rivals were UCLA, who fell to the Bears 31-21. Halfback Solomon Williams was the Bears' top scorer with four tries and six conversions while Dougie Brown, Rand Santos, and Max Threlkeld each scored three tries.
This week's event will see Cal, Claremont Colleges, Grand Canyon, San Diego State, UCLA, University of San Diego, University of Texas El Paso, and University of Southern California all compete. Some teams will also field 2nd teams.
The tournament wll be broadcast over two days on The Rugby Network. and USA 7s coaches will be in attendance to watch the games.
