Slimmest Margin Possible in Missouri Final
The Footybills battled for the Missouri State Championship vs. the KC Jr. Blues at Gans Creek Park in Columbia, Missouri this weekend.
The Kansas City Junior Blues edged St. Louis University High by a slim margin, taking the Missouri state final 15-14 Saturday in a dynamic game that had fans on the edge of their seats.
The first half drew to a close with SLUH leading at a halftime by a score of 7 to 5, setting the stage for an intense second half.
The Jr. Blues took the lead on a long line break from their dynamic center Lance Nauer early in the second half. But SLUH bounced right back as Nathan Gunn propelled the Footybills through the Jr. Blues' defense, scoring a try that put SLUH ahead 14 to 10.
But the Blues pushed over a try in the corner through Charlie Bauer with five minutes left to take a 15-14 lead.
SLUH had a late chance for a penalty goal that wasn't meant to be.
"We came up just a hair short against a really quality team. We'll get to work and prepare to compete for a National Championship in a few weeks," said SLUH Coach Brian Corrigan.
Nauer ended the game with two tries for the Blues.
"This came down to the final whistle but was a great win taking down the three-time reigning champs and picking up our 8th championship in club history," said Jr. Blues Head Coach Casey Cummings.
Both teams look ahead to the Boys HS Rugby National Championships in two weeks in Elkhart, Ind.
