Brown Women Top All in CRC 7s
Four champions were crownd Sunday in the Women's CRC 7s in Maryland.
D1 Premier
Brown repeated as women's CRC Premier champions, downing Army in a close one 12-5 n the final.
This was the second straight year those two had battled it out in the CRC final.
Kate Muldoon set up Sorensen finalist Akilah Cathey for the opening try as Cathey powered through tackles to score. A massive break from the speedy Morgan Cunningham made it 12-0 at the break.
But Brown would not score any further and Army recommitted to defense and looked to overcome the deficit. The Black Knights did score, but with less than two minutes to play they didn't have enough time to regain possession and follow up.
Navy defeated AIC for third while Bowdoin, as predicted by GRR, did very well to 5th, shutting out both Notre Dame College and Penn State in the process. Their only loss was 12-5 to AIC.
D1 Club
Claremont Colleges has won two CRAA D2 titles with a wide-open, high-skill game and they unleashed that this weekend in the D1 Club CRC bracket, beating Florida State, Northern Iowa, Ohio State, and, in the final, Oregon. Strangely, it was Florida State in Round 1 that produced their closest game. Alex Meecham led the team in tries and was the tournament MVP.
Ohio State took third in a nailbiter over Clemson. UConn took 5th over Boise State.
D2 and Small College
Wisconsin Eau-Claire had to fight for it, edging GVSU and Temple along the way, but took care of Roger Williams in the final to win D2. Temple took a well-deserved third while Coast Guard, after a close loss to Temple, stormed on to take 5th.
In the small college bracket Yale handled Christopher Newport 19-0, a tough Endicott team 17-7, and then we almost held in check by Colby in the semis. The Bulldogs emerged 7-5 winners and then cruised past Gannon 31-7 to take it all. Colby was a clear 3rd over Niagara while East Strousburg, close losers to Niagara in the quarters took 5th.
