St. Augustine NJ Logs Head-Turning Win Over Georgetown Prep
The St. Augustine Hermits out of New Jersey pulled off a big result Friday night, beating Georgetown Prep 24-14 in a cross-border clash.
The Hermits went into the game ranked #48 but GRR, having moved up following a shutout win over Delbarton. Georgetown Prep was ranked #24. So this was an important showing by St. Augustine.
The Hermits' scrum has been quite solid and that aspect of play had a big night against the Hoyas. They stole two balls against the head and Head Coach Michael Gunn called the scrum performance of late "amazing."
PJ Degnan scored two tries against a tough Georgetown Prep defense and he has six on the season now.
John McAllister was huge after contact, carrying multiple players with him for extra meters on more than one occasion. Sophomore Dom Botto came in to fill in for an injured player early in the game and stepped up his game at an important time. Peter Earnest also went over for a try for the Hermits.
With the score 19-14 late in the game St. Augustine needed to seal the deal, and they did that when Alex Yurgin found a seam and broke through. His try made it a two-score lead and St. Augustine would hold on from there.
The Hermits JV team also won, beating Georgetown Prep's JVs 42-33. This all follows on their shutout win over Delbarton in which the Hermits' scrum was a massive factor. St. Augustine's ball security and passing was better, which helped them because the scrums following Delbarton handling errors simple served to give St. Augstine a platform and tire out the Delbarton pack.
Next up for the Hermits is Christian Brothers Academy, which is coming off a solid showing at the Gonzaga Classic. That league rivalry match will be this coming Thursday. Georgetown Prep looks ahead to another out-of-state opponent in Staples HS from Connecticut.
