In an intriguing non-conference boys high school rugby matchup, the Vienna rugby team defeated the Gregory the Great Academy (GGA) with a final score of 21-14 Saturday.

GGA gained an early lead, capitalizing on an intercepted pass to take a 7-0 advantage. However, Vienna swiftly regrouped and ultimately established control, leading 21-7 going into the final two minutes of the game.

Despite a late-game charge by GGA that culminated in a try and conversion, Vienna secured the win with a score of 21-14. GGA had a shot to win it but were held out as time expired.

One star of the match, Vienna center Christopher Scheuerman, back from having missed all of last season with injury, scored all three Vienna three tries. He was also team captain.

Vienna's coach, Kendal Erickson, paid tribute to the disciplined and cohesive play of GGA, acknowledging that it was a great opportunity for the newcomers in his team to be tested against a formidable side.

"Garrett Van Beek is a great coach who runs a top-class rugby program at Gregory the Great," said Erickson. "It was great to host them. At the start they were much more cohesive and disciplined, while Vienna was rusty and shaky—snow and cold has done a number on our ability to train—and given we are still missing several of our wrestlers. Gregory the Great are exceptional tacklers and very disciplined. You can tell they are very well coached."

He added: "We plan to make this an annual fixture on the schedule. Gregory the Great is all class!"
