More States Kick Off HS Sevens This Weekend
While Colorado has already started its girls HS 7s, we see more action this weekend with Utah, Indiana, Iowa, and Pennsylvania all getting tournaments in.
HS Girls, 7th/8th-grade Girls, and HS Boys are all in action in Utah.
It's a stacked boys bracket with Herriman, East, Mountain Ridge, Riverton, and Olympus playing.
For the girls there are a few more teams this year, with United, a combined Provo/Wasatch team, Majestics, AF Legendz, and Mountain Ridge.
Iowa starts its season on Monday (all tournaments are on Monday nights). All teams will play two games. Defending champs Waverly Shell opens against the team that finished second to them, Cedar Rapids. Twelve teams are in action on Monday.
Idaho enters its second week after a series of non-league warmup games. Boise, Idaho Falls, Middleton, Timberline, and Capital are all competing. Idaho also has its West ADA league and that gets going in earnest with Meridian, Rocky Mountain, Mountain View, Owyhee, Centennial, and Eagle HS in action. There is some crossover between these two leagues with, for example, Centennial and Meridian sending a separate squad to the Idaho event, and that's not too hard because this week they're all playing at Eagle HS.
And in Pennsylvania it's about who is big on 7s. Lasalle HS reportedly has dozens of players in training and that seems to be the case considering they are entering three teams in Rugby PA's main tournament. St. Joseph's Prep has comparable depth and will be entering two teams. Conestoga also has two teams.
Fall 7s has, as we've mentioned before, helped bolster rugby numbers and it's a great way for players who perhaps tired of other sports to test out the game. Overall the boys league will have three pools of four teams:
Pool A: Lasalle I, St. Joe's II, Bishop Shanahan, Conestoga II
Pool B: LaSalle II, St. Joe's I, Berks County, Downingtown
Pool C: LaSalle III, Conestoga I, Knightmare, White Horse
The first tournament is Sunday at ... LaSalle HS.
The girls bracket looks to include as many as 11 teams, which is hugely encouraging for the league there. Knightmare, Doylestown, and Downingtown are probably the favorites.
Rugby Indiana kicks off a robust boys and girls season this weekend in Westfield with the first game the always tough Carmel girls team against Penn HS. There are 10 girls teams in action and as many as 12 boys teams.
