Davenport Defeats Iowa Central But Tritons Make Them Work
Davenport upended Iowa Centra CC 36-10 in a very useful preseason game for both teams.
For the Panthers, it was a pretty good showing considering they have been back on campus for just over a week. Head Coach Dustin Steedman said he was proud of his players for working hard against a very tenacious Triton side.
Davenport ran two long training days last weekend and then hit training hard through the week. They came out running then, and ready to play. Steedman is developing a new flyhalf after the graduation of Sean Nolan and "it was nice to see that the offense can still get some points on the board," he said. "I couldn't be more excited for the season and to represent the Midwest Rugby Conference."
Depth is of course important, too, and Davenport's 2nds came back from a first-half deficit to win 24-19.
"They have been sponges in the one week they have been with us, learning and organizing," said Steedman.
The newer players such as Rockford HS product Dawson Hovingh (flyhalf), Woodlands outside back Lucas Staggs, football transfer Gavin Falk, and Traverse City product Sam Goethals all played well.
For Iowa Central, this was a very important test of how they measure up with a high-caliber team. They did well and despite falling behind 26-3 at halftime held the Panthers close in the second period.
"We weren't about to back down," said Head Coach Brent Nelson. "We played a really solid match against a very good side. This team has heart and I am looking forward to seeing how we come back Monday and grow from this."
