The Utah Lions Girls showed well in the opening day of the Heidelberg 7s, a tournament being used as a tuneup for the United World Games in Austria.
But before we get to Austria we have to worry about Germany and here the Lions won Pool A defeating Dutch Girls Rugby 34-0, Dubai 38-7, and Stade Francais 38-0.
Under captain Chloe de Leon and Head Coach Kate Flanagan the Lions, which is made up of players from seven different states, gave up just the one try all day and, frankly, dominated.
Also in the Girls U18 bracket, the USA Outlaws (or Texas Rangers if you want to call them that) and Saskatchewan's Dog River Howlers battled it out in Pool B with French team Rugby Alsace and German team RBW. RBW won the pool beating the Howlers 40-7 and the Outlaws 32-0. The Texans sneaked by Alsace 24-19 and Dog River won comfortably against the French team 38-0. That set up then a clash between Dog River and the Outlaws for 2nd in the pool. The Canadians took that one 31-7.
So that put Dog River in the semis while the Outlaws will go into the 5th-place semis. Here are the matchups:
Cup Semifinals
North American Lions vs Dog River Howlers

The three North American programs were also in the Boys U16 bracket. Both NA Lions and Dog River finished 2nd in their pool.
For the Lions, they started well against Bayern with a 36-5 victory with two tries from Aiden O'Connor. Riley Scrogham, Netane Fakahafua, Amari Barron, and Lenny Ibarra also touched down, with Ibarra converting two and Scrogham one.
They backed that up with a shutout win over RBW 2, but were dropped 31-12 Rugby Academy Zuid of the Netherlands in the pool decider.
Dog River started their campaign with a nice shutout win over Brandenberg while the Rangers were dropped 39-0 by German team RBW. The second game for both North American sides was against each other, with the Howlers beating the Rangers 28-5. The Rangers rebounded for a nice 29-14 win over Brandenberg, while Dog River were edged by a very good RBW team 17-12 in the pool decider.
The Czech Republic national U16s won Pool C and now we have the quarterfinals all set.
The Rangers, by virtue of being one of the two better 3rd-place teams, get into the top eight; Brennan Thompson scored three tries on the day for the Rangers, while Broday Hopkins and Kaden Nixon added two each.
