SLUH Shows Well in All-Catholic Tournament
St. Louis University High hosted the All-Catholic Rugby Festival over the weekend, which included one team from Canada in a contest of four varsity teams and four JV teams.
Finally the weather cooperated (somewhat) for this weekend and the teams faced off over two days.
SLUH showed well. They beat St. Martin's Kingfishers out of the Kansas City area 29-12, St. James Academy out of Kansas 36-5, and Winnipeg's St. Paul's 33-5.
It was a new tournament for SLUH to host and was a success as they look to expand the event over time.
"We had strong performances from a lot of guys this week," said. SLUH Head Coach Joe Husgen.
These included flyhalf Trey Dino and fullback Jack Mcgaughy in the backs.
"They both made quality decisions over the weekend leading our attack and keeping us on the correct side of midfield," added Husgen.
Up front, lock Tommy Donelon and hooker Teddy Janson impressed.
(The players gather after the tournament)
"Tommy was putting in work all around the pitch, making strong runs on offense and providing stout defense around the breakdown," said Husgen. "Teddy just seemed to round a corner this weekend, playing with a chip on his shoulder. His physicality went up and he provided some strong play out in the wide channel."
Next up for SLUH is Eureka in Missouri Youth Rugby action and then a trip to Cincinnati to play Moeller and St. Xavier.
