Southern Rugby Conference Runs Two 7s Tournaments
The Southern Rugby Conference hosted two sevens events this past weekend at the campus of East Carolina University.
The first was the NCR Qualifier for small college teams that consisted of a mixture of conference and out-of-conference teams. The second was the SRC D1/D2 Championship. Both were run with the same format of teams playing in a group of four pool with the top two from each advancing to knock out rounds.
In the Small-College division Coastal Carolina, Southeastern Louisiana, Wake Forest, and College of Charleston all cruised to the semis. Coastal and Wake advanced to the finals where Coastal overpowered the Deacons to take the title and earn their spot in the CRC Small College division.
The Chanticleers were dominant on the day out scoring their opposition 202-17.
In the D1/D2 division Belmont Abbey and East Carolina advanced through their pool to advance to the knockouts. The other pool ended in a three-way tie between NC State, UNC-Chapel Hill, and UNC Wilmington. After the tiebreaker was figured out NC State and Chapel Hill ended up moving on to the knockout rounds.
Both of the semifinals were tightly-contested games; in the end Belmont Abbey defeated UNC and NC State outlasted ECU.
In a very entertaining final Belmont Abbey came out on top defeating NC State 21-12 to claim the Southern Rugby Conference championship and also earn themselves a spot in the Premier Division at NCR's CRC.
NC State will advance as well to the D2 division at CRC by being the highest finishing Division 2 team at the tournament.
