We talked more directly about Atlantis last night.
Atlantis Impresses on Day One at Tropical 7s
But yes, they have shown well in the U18 Elite and the U16 brackets.
U18 Boys Elite
Eagle Impact Rugby Academy brought a powerful team to the fore this time around with Cort Schmidlin making plays and several players working together in a nice pattern. They played a tough defensive front.
Rebel Rugby lost their opener and weren't too happy about it but slammed Future Elite before beating Layton Christian in what has become a nice rivalry.
And while USA South looked solid, the class of the bracket is probably Rangataua out of New Zealand, which was skilled and quick—but they weren't infallible, giving up 24 points.
However, having said that, their 54-0 shutout of the Atlantis Black team was a bit of a message to everyone else.
U18 Boys Open
Laguna Beach, USA Rugby South, Pioneer 7s, and Rebel Rugby Academy all were undefeated. These are five-team pools so one team in each pool had to play four games on Day One. Of those, only Rebel went 4-0.
A nod to Alaska, which traveled a long way to compete in this one of the few competitions they are able to play in. Practicing in a dome in the cold of the North, they looked very capable and got a nice win over Équipe Quebec.
U16 Boys Elite
Atlantis was very impressive in their first two games and then edged an equally impressive Hawkeyes side to win their pool. Gorilla Rugby went undefeated and unscored-upon in Pool A while Canadian side Oakville Crusaders played with the unity you need to have if you're a stand-alone team among select sides.
Keep a close eye on Hawkeyes and also USA South Panther Academy, which ended up 2-1 but a very close 2-1.
U16 Boys Open
USA South and Burlington Centaurs went 3-0, but it was a wild one in Pool B with USA West, Gorilla, and Oashawa all 2-1. USA West, which went from strength to strength through the day, took the tiebreaker to win the pool.
