Competitive Florida Conference Looks to Week 3
Week #3 of the Florida College season sees everyone enter competition with only one … one team at 2-0.
South Florida is the only team to not have lost a game and USF will host North Florida this weekend in a quest to go 3-0.
Sure they won by a lone point over Florida Atlantic, but they still won.
“A tight finish against an athletic and very physical FAU squad that could have finished with either coming away with the victory,” said USF Head Coach Austin Dacanay, who called it “a pure defensive battle.”
It was just a battle of attrition, but one of those games where a good team shows its mettle.
Also showing something was Central Florida. Considered a conference contender, UCF lost their opener but defeated FIU 38-27 behind tries from hooker Spencer Place, center Thomas Coletti II, wing Anthony Thompson, fullback Edward Prevost, and lock Jeremiah Birch. Flyhalf Caleb Goertzen was solid on his goalkicking, too.
“We had some nice corrections this week after a pretty eye-opening video review session,” said Head Coach Evan Haigh. “We also were able to get a lot of newer players some clarity on their roles and where they need to be. The players were determined to write the wrongs of the UF game; we had a real focus on breakdown and being super accurate there. We still have a lot of issues to solve, FIU caused us plenty of problems and we know we have some huge challenges ahead of us in the next four weeks.”
UCF hosts Florida Atlantic, while Florida, which lost a competitive game to Florida State, takes on 1-1 FIU.
