Fallbrook, Cathedral Win in SCIRF
Fallbrook and Cathedral Catholic both won in SCIRF action this weekend.
Cathedral moved to 3-0 with a 47-7 victory over La Costa Canyon. Fallbrook rode a solid defensive effort to defeat Mira Costa 24-3.
"I felt really good about it," said Fallbrook Head Coach Sierra Arteaga. "It was a very wet game but our defense came through. They did a really good job putting pressure on Mira Costa; our whole emphasis in practice this week was on defense."
Joao Sousa had a big game. Moving from outside center to flyhalf Sousa ran the attack nicely and communicated and directed the team movement on defense.
His kicking game was solid and that was, in part, an in-game adjustment by Fallbrook. The rainstorms in California were felt in all games this weekend and certainly in this one. Mira Costa went to the boot early and Fallbrook realized that was the way to go.
"We mimicked what they were doing and the strategic kicking became important," said Arteaga. And Sousa was a big part of that, as was the forward pack, which adjusted well and played smartly as a unit.
This all sets up a Fallbrook vs Cathedral clash next week at CC.
