SoCal Holiday Scrum Down Kicks Off Season
The First Annual So-Cal Holiday Scrum Down was held at La Jolla High School this past Saturday.
Torrey Pines, Carlsbad, San Marcos and La Jolla all competed in a round robin of scrimmages featuring JV and Varsity teams. It was a great Saturday evening of rugby that also brought in over one hundred gift donations for Toys for Tots.
"It was a great way for experienced players to return to rugby and for new players to get exposed to our amazing game," said Ethan Willis who is on the coaching staff at La Jolla and Torrey Pines. "All of the games were relatively close, which was beneficial for the kids and the coaches."
The premier matchup of the day was Torrey Pines Varsity vs. Carlsbad Varsity. Both teams were missing some of their players, but Torrey was able to claim a 12-7 win. No. 8 Jacob Jaffe was strong over the ball for Torrey and Ryan Valenzano played well at wing.
"It is fun to meet old foes so early in the season," said Torrey Pines Head Coach Matty Sandoval, "Both teams were missing a few guys and the next time we see each other, we will surely both be at our best. But, an early test helps both sides."
Carlsbad Head Coach Josh Williams echoed Sandoval's sentiments, saying it is "always great to get the season started against class programs like La Jolla, San Marcos, and Torrey Pines. They played smart, tough rugby which is just what we need to test out our defensive metal and get our attack started. A great day for Carlsbad rugby and we are thankful to the coaches and administrators at La Jolla for inviting and hosting us."
"La Jolla High is a great facility and we are fully supported by the school and staff," Willis continued, "We will expand the So-Cal Scrum Down next year and give more teams an opportunity to prepare for the season and donate more gifts to Toys for Tots."
