Strong Showing as Southeastern Louisiana Puts Hand Up
Playing in the Deep South, Southeastern Louisiana could well be a Men's D2 College dark horse and showed that over the weekend with a win over the University of Houston.
Played on a very hot Saturday evening, the game was tight in the first half, but opened up for a 52-22 SLU victory.
The Lions were strong in the lineouts and scrums throughout, and that pressure from the pack set up opportunities for the backs.
"Our first half was not what we wanted, but we played our game in the second," said SLU Head Coach Mark Dixson. "We’ve got a lot to work on. It was a tough first half as the men were a little game rusty, but we knocked that off at the half and finished with a strong disciplined second.”
Several first-year players showed well for SLU.
Felix Hamilton-Marino, scored 32 points, for one. Former St. Paul's HS standout Ben Dufour is a lock/flanker who has a ton of potential and he scored his first collegiate try for the Lions. Two other freshmen, flyhalf Tyler Anclade (Brother Martin) and wing/scrumhalf Anthony Laporte (St Paul's) should be getting more time as the season goes on.
The upperclassmen got in on the action, too. Senior lock Triston Siskron scored two tries while brothers Connor Hog (lock) and Keagan Hogg (back) showed well. The brothers are from South Africa and Connor Hogg was especially useful in the lineouts.
Next up for Southeastern Louisiana is Tulane, and certainly they go into that game with plenty of confidence.
