Plenty of Statements in NIRA D1 Week 2
Harvard laid down a statement win over the weekend with a 48-19 defeat of Quinnipiac in Week Two of NIRA action.
Freshman Lennox London (Charlotte Tigress and Cardinals) made a sparkling debut and scored the team's first try in her way to a first-half hat trick. Freshman Cameron Fields (Sac PAL Amazons) scored the Crimson's second try and freshman Tiahna Padilla (Fallbrook HS) also crossed over in an impressive first half.
Fields added another in the second half. The only non-first-year players to score were senior Cassidy Bargell (try), sophomore Chloe Headland (try and a conversion), and junior Brogan Mior, who added three conversions.
Riva van der Valk, Addison Walker, and Hazel Bice all recorded a try for the Bobcats. The game was still relatively close with 28 minutes to go at 31-19, but Harvard did well to put Quinnipiac away and open up their NIRA season 1-0.
Army Rolls
In another big scoring win, Army moved to 2-0 with a 87-0 defeat of Princeton and have 149 points scored in their first two games.
Dramatic End for Brown, Sacred Heart
Brown ran out to a 12-0 lead with tries from Akilah Cathey and Madia Parker. But the Pioneers clawed back with a try from Makinzie Youngblood, converted by Alyssa Cunningham, who then added a penalty goal to make it 12-10.
Noelle Lewis's try kep Brown ahead at 19-10 only for Sacred Heart to score two converted tries to take a 24-19 lead.
Brown needed every second of the 80-minute contest and captain Kate Molloy went over to tie the game 24-24. Her conversion drifted just wide to preserve the tie.
"What I love about this team is their resilience and how much they can persist through difficult times and they really demonstrated that today," Brown Head Coach Rosalind Chou said. "We were even down a person with the yellow card but I had full confidence they were going to fight to the end. I'm just beyond proud as a coach that they are just gritty and can fight to the end."
With the results, Army leads the league after just a couple of games, but we haven't seen Dartmouth or LIU in action yet. Dartmouth plays Sacred Heart next week.
