San Jose, Calif. – San Jose State Club Sports, in concert with the Spartan Alumni Rugby Board, has announced that Nick Schlobohm will lead the SJSU Spartans Men’s Rugby team as Head Coach effective immediately.
Schlobohm had a storied career as a rugby player at Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, Calif., winning three national championships under coach Tim O’Brien, two in 15s, and one in 7s. He was the top try-scorer in 2014 and also named to the USA Rugby All-Playoff team that same year. His club career saw him playing with Back Bay 7s as well as winning a DIII divisional championship with Olde Gaels 15s.
He also served as 1st team defensive coach, as well as head coach for the 2nd team, for the Olde Gaels while still a player.
While playing for East Bay Blues, Schlobohm won the Carlsberg Cup 7s championship and he has also coached in regional youth rugby camps.
“I’m honored to continue striving for excellence with SJSU Men’s Rugby and excited about the new challenges ahead," said Schlobohm. "The goal remains the same – continue to build on the amazing foundation that has been established and ensure that these players can be counted amongst the best in NorCal collegiate rugby.”
Schlobohm’s appointment marks only the 4th time in club history that a non-SJSU graduate has led the Spartan Men’s Rugby program since its founding in 1971.
“Our long-term vision is to define a culture of rugby steeped in camaraderie, honoring the past but developing for the future," said Schlobohm. "We want to bring awareness of the sport to the wider SJSU athletic community, building a strong foundation for excellence, through recruiting, both on the field and beyond college. In the short term, we’ll focus on getting to know the players, identifying, and using their skills, while developing a new dimension to Spartan Rugby. To do that, we’ll be focused on building unity as a platform for success resulting in the development of a championship-caliber team. We believe success breeds a future with even more players buying-in to the vision of championships as not just possible but expected.”
