Lots of Rankings Ramifications in DIA Games This Week

BYU played Cal last year, with Cal winning 37-28. David Barpal photo.

The rankings will get plenty of fodder this week with 19 teams in action.

Nineteen, not 20, as San Diego State gets back on the fields against top DIAA team Cal State Long Beach.

First off, here are the results of the latest DIA rankings poll:

Our vote, by the way, isn't too different from the compiled poll:

1. Cal; 2. Army; 3. Saint Mary's; 4. Lindenwood; 5. Life; 6. BYU; 7. Navy; 8. Central Washington; 9. Ohio State; 10. Indiana; 11. Penn State; 12. Davenport; 13. Arkansas State; 14. Colorado State; 15. UCLA; 16. Texas A&M; 17. Arizona; 18. Grand Canyon; 19. Colorado; 20. Cal Poly; 21. Michigan State; 22. Utah; 23. Utah Valley; 24. Oklahoma; 25. Baylor

We're much harsher on Arizona and Grand Canyon that others, but at the same time Cal's results over those two vault the Golden Bears into #1. So it's a bit of a conundrum. We also keep Baylor and Oklahoma in the top 25. Texas beat Baylor last week in a bizarre game that Baylor seemed to have control over. Then tries from Maxwell Palmer, Miles Powell, Mauricio Trevino (twice), and a penalty try won it 45-44 for the Longhorns. GRR is waiting to see Texas build on that. They can do that this week against an improving Oklahoma. The winner of that game may well solidify a spot in the Top 25 for a while.

Utah at UCLA is another game with a lot on the line rankings-wise. After all, UCLA's ranking is mostly based on competitive losses. Utah really hasn't played much at all. Central Washington at Arizona is another one, which Arizona trying to flush the memory of the loss to Cal. Cal, meanwhile, hosts BYU is a huge game. BYU has shown itself to be pretty solid this year. Will Billy Tenney's red card last week have an effect?
