Colorado Wraps Up HS Fall 7s
Rugby Colorado crowned its fall 7s champions this November with its usual girls competition and, for the first time, a boys championship too.
Since the 15s season ran late this year, there was no summer 7s for the boys so they played this fall.
Five girls teams and 11 boys teams competed in a series of jamborees each other. The boys teams were split into a Tier 1 and Tier 2 for the finals and the girls also had two tiers, with a Tier 1 plus a 2nd tier that also included some JV teams.
At each jamboree teams earned points and that seeded them for the final tournament November 6.
In the end, with the girls, three teams ended up very close, and that showed in the finals. Highlands Ranch, which came into the final tournament seeded #3, beat the Lumberjackies on a last-second try to win the semifinal, and then beat the #1-seeded Fort Collins team. Fort Collins beat Glendwood Springs to make the final. That championship game was the first loss of the season for the Fort Collins Hammers.
In the Boys brackets, North High School out of Denver, a new program still putting it all together, beat a favored East HS in the Tier 2 final. In the Tier 1, East High School's Tier 1 team faced off with Castle Rock. East had beaten Valor Christian in the semifinal while Castle Rock had put aside a tough PAC team. In the championship game Castle Rock led until the final minute when East broke through for a long range try just as time was expiring. East HS finished without a loss all season.
