The Men's DII College Bracket So Far
The Men's DII College Bracket So Far
This past week and the coming weekend will fill in our Men's DII college bracket for the fall.
National Collegiate Rugby (NCR) is running the playoffs and has a Round of 16-Quarterfinal weekend November 19-21 in four locations: Cherry Hill, NJ, Charleston SC, Knoxville, Tenn., and St. Louis Mo.
The teams that win their two playoff games that weekend will go to Houston, Texas for the semis and final at AVEVA Stadium December 10-12. On both weekends teams will be playing on Friday and Sunday, giving them a day off between games.
What we already know:
Scores from DII Games This Past Weekend
Principia rolled through the Gateway playoffs with big wins over UMS&T and St. Louis University. S&T was in the playoff as a late fill-in because Central Missouri couldn't make it. S&T and UCM had tied in the regular season so it was an obvious fit. Still, S&T did well just to pitch-up. On the other side, St. Louis University beat Pitt State, which was a bit of a surprise. So Principia is into the Round of 16 and SLU has a play-in game.
Minnesota-Duluth beat MSU Mankato in Otsego to win the Northern Lights. It's been a slight season in Minnesota but they got it done. Duluth plays Principia in a wild Rd of 16 opener.
The regular season decides the Great Lakes, and Adrian College is #1 and Central Michigan is #2. CMU gets a play-in against another team with a new varsity program in its conference—almost certainly Thomas More out of MCRC, who has Marian to contend with.
Great Midwest is down to two with Northern Iowa and Illinois State (!) winning semifinals. Illinois State, Northern Iowa to Great Midwest Final
Marquette and Wisconsin-Whitewater play for 3rd and that's a play-in date with SLU.
Tri-State also has two teams left. Not surprisingly, one is Marist. Yes surprisingly, the other is RPI. The Engineers lost 19-8 to the Merchant Marine Academy back on September 26, but beat Kings Point in overtime this past weekend. Interestingly, RPI opened their season 0-2 (they also lost to Marist), but didn't wilt or throw in any towels and just kept plugging away. Now they're in the conference final, which is this coming weekend. Tri State Finalists Set
IUP is on the inside track to win the Allegheny, but needs to wait for Saturday's winner of Kent State vs West Virginia for Sunday's final. In the MARC, Villanova plays Bucknell and Georgetown plays Drexel (in our opinion, and we've been wrong before, the Villanova-Bucknell game seems more like a final). That's the semifinal, and on Sunday they play the final, with #1 playing in the Round of 16, and #2 in a play-in with the Cardinals #1.
Who will be ... probably Virginia. They play VCU on Sunday for the conference championship. That weekend we'll also see the New England Wide final (Norwich vs UMass Lowell), and the 3rd-4th game (Vermont vs Providence). The #3 team gets a play-in game against the Tri-State winner.
And the Southern Conference is weird because we had one semi already (UNC-Charlotte over UNC-Chapel Hill) while the other one, Furman vs UNC-Wilmington, won't be played until this coming Saturday. Then on November 13 they play the final. Good thing the Southern Conference has no play-in games. Both #1 and #2 will be in the Round of 16.
