Mary Washington and Mount St. Mary's both joined Queen's University Charlotte atop the Chesapeake Conference after both teams won games this weekend.

Mount St. Mary's defeated Maryland 36-3 with tries from Cuyler McCorkindale, Hunter Herzog, Brendan McCarthy, Matt White, Liam Horton, and Evan Corbett. Edrich Gutmann converted two and Corbett one in a solid performance by Mount to put them at 2-0.

UMW Marches On

Mary Washington beat a well-regarded Southern Virginia team 52-15 to move to 2-0 in the Chesapeake.

On a tight, fast pitch UMW needed quick hands and lightening ball movement to deal with a skilled and physical SVU squad. Fullback Bill Tamani sliced through SVU's defense early and raced 50 meters to score, and with UMW's defense holding well and forcing errors, they were able to build on that early lead.

At halftime it was 30-0 UMW with UMW’s pack setting the platform. Tighthead Cameron Giwa-McNeil scored a nice try and in the backs freshman scrumhalf Kit Waddington cleaned up all types of ball and hit his schoolboy teammate Jamie Cooper at pace all day. Jamie’s kick and pass selection was very good,

At the start of the second half SVU showed some power, pinned Mary Washington back and scored two unconverted tries. UMW answered with a pair of converted penalties from Cooper and then SVU muscled another one over under the posts.

The rest of the half was UMW stretching the field and playing some nice team rugby. Senior Seamus Brennan scored a try and was a calming force on offense and defense all day. Sebastian Schefermann stretched SVU’s defense and logged a number of assists and scored a second-half try himself. Sophomore Riley Lopez also rambled over for one.

Cooper was player of the game for his smart kicking and calm leadership of the attack. He ended the day with five conversions and four penalties for 22 points. Rory Naylor was a big presence on defense while Joseph Ritter and Aidan Gallagher were key in setting up teammates for tries.

Virginia Tech Wins

The Virginia Tech Hokies won their first game of the season, beating a rebuilding NC State 57-0. The chase is on.
