Staples Makes History With Win Over Greenwich
Staples HS defeated Greenwich in a defensive battle 10-5 in Rugby Connecticut action.
In the 18-year history of Staples Rugby, they have never beaten Greenwich, until this weekend.
Both teams played expansive wide ball and mixed in a more vertical forward attack, but the defenses were stronger. In the end, AJ Deangelis and George Engels scored tries for Staples, and that was the difference.
Lock Owen Clarke was very effective in the lineouts and played hard on defense. No. 8 Brandon Saunders poached ball in the ruck on numerous occasions and that helped keep the Greenwich attack in check,
"The boys played a very hard-fought game today and didn’t give up or move away from the game plan at all," said Staples Head Coach David Lyme. "I am very proud of what they have achieved and this will be remembered for many years to come. We can enjoy this for a few days but we will need to get back and switch on for our next game."
