Marian Win Shows Improvement For New College Team
Marian University recorded a nicely-taken 35-19 win over Indiana over the weekend to record the teams second victory in its inaugural season.
It was Indiana's 2nd side, for the most part, with IU playing and beating the Indianapolis Impalas men's club on the same day. But with Marian being a brand new team, with mostly young players, several of whom had played almost no rugby before this spring, it was a big step forward.
"For a brand new side which was started during a pandemic we have definitely improved every match," said Marian head Coach John Harley. "From Lindenwood to ICCC and finishing with IU we improved bioth physically and mentally."
With 14 players committed for the fall Marian should be ready to enter DII competition in good shape.
"Our goal is to give kids the opportunity for a great education, graduate, and play high-level rugby," said Harley.
In a way, this truncated spring was a good testing ground for the Knights, as they get to see what is required, and play tough competition before entering a full conference.
