All-Time American List: Keenya Warner
All-Time American List: Keenya Warner
Keenya Warner was capped eight times for the USA, which may not be a lot, but she made them count.
The vice captain for the 2006 Rugby World Cup team, she commanded great respect in the midfield as one of the best centers in the tournament. She helped lead the USA to a 4-1 record and a 5th-place finish that was lower than they truly deserved.
A smooth-running, team oriented player who made her fellow backs better, Warner led the New York Rugby Club and the Northeast territorial team to multiple playoff appearances and championships. It was with Warner at the helm that the Northeast women finally overcame the Pacific Coast to win a national all-star championship.
She was capped for the first time in 2003 and in fact in that year was awarded USA Rugby's player of the year award, and she continued to be in consideration for that award the rest of her career. But Warner was more than a hard-hitting defender, fast and elusive runner, and superb passer. She was a team-builder, and a winner.
