All-Time American List: Loren Hawley
All-Time American List: Loren Hawley
Loren Hawley was widely considered one of the very best rugby players to suit up for Cal.
An openside flanker who was dominant in the lineout and athletic and physical all over the field, Hawley probably could have played anywhere from lock to flanker to No. 8 to center and still have an enormous impact on the game.
Hawley played before there was a USA national team and it was his performance with Cal that earns him a nod here. His zenith with the Bears was likely 1965, when Cal was undefeated in domestic play and toured Australia and New Zealand, where the Bears shocked everyone by going 5-2-2.

Dubbed the "King of the Lineouts" as he combined his 6-4 height and his jumping ability to win ball on a consistent basis, Hawley also played football for Cal, lettering as a defensive back and a wide receiver in four seasons. He is a member of the Cal Sports Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame.
Hawley began a rugby tradition at Cal, as his sons Garrett and Colin both excelled with the Bears—Colin represented the USA at 7s and 15s.
