All-Time American List: Tom Selfridge

A very intelligent, accomplished rugby player, Selfridge played only a few test matches for the USA from 1976-1980.

He was the first No. 8 to play for the USA in the modern era, starting a long tradition of excellent back row men throughout American rugby's history. But he played against top-flight teams, suiting up against Australia, France, and Wales. His performances against those teams garnered international notice as the world started to see that American rugby players were pretty good, after all.

Before all that, Selfridge played football for the University of Cincinnati, and then found rugby with the Cleveland Blues and the Schenectady Reds. The latter he captained to a 24-game winning streak. According to the US Rugby Hall of Fame, he ended his career having played 732 matches in 19 states and 10 countries.
